'Little Gardens' Brooklyn Flea Market, NYC

Having recently moved into my new house, and experienced the obligatory 'sort out' that comes with this, I was reminded of a holiday to New York back in September. Sorting through my office (a rather large task) I came across this lovely hand drawn business card for Little Gardens...

My girlfriend and I discovered these gorgeous minature gardens at the treasure trove that is Brooklyn Flea Market - a wonderful stall consisting of charming succulents planted in antique brickwork. We instantly fell in love with these little brick gardens and longed to bring one home with us! Unfortunately due to UK customs regulations the best we could do was get some photographs to share with you...

The great thing about these little beauties is the minimal amount of nurturing they need. If you're feeling creative try making your own 'Little Garden' in a flower pot, or perhaps a more unusual container with a drainage hole. We're off to Ardingly Antiques Fair later this month to hunt down something to plant ours in!

Check out this link for tips on how to grow your own succulents, and the Little Gardens Facebook page for more inspirational images.

Landscape Show - Graduate Gardens

Fisrtly I should take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year!!

To kick off 2012 Thomas Houghton Gardens have some great news we would like to share.  In late 2011 we entered a competition run by Landscape Show for a space to exhibit under the Graduate Gardens section of the show.  We are very proud to announce we are one of a handful of designers that have been chosen to show case what we can offer when it comes to Garden Design and Construction.

Landscape Show is the trade exhibition for all those involved with interior & exterior landscaping and landscape gardening.  Landscape Show features manufacturers and suppliers of everything from cut flowers and vases through to pots and flag stones, conservatories and water features.

Our garden is called 'Sustainable Spaces'.  Its design is based on the theme of creating a space that is both aesthetically pleasing whilst also being practical and engaging the viewer, highlighting some simple ways we can harness nature to benefit our gardens.  We are trying to create a space that encourages bio-diversity and sustainability within a garden setting.  By using sustainable/ recycled materials we hope to highlight some of the ways we, and the public viewing the garden, can create gardens that offer solutions to future problems, ie, water shortage or fresh produce sourcing .  The garden will be practical in the sense that it will have elements that can happily be transferred from a Show Garden environment and be applied to any garden whether it be in a rural or urban setting.  We hope the garden will be able to inspire people and get them to take away ideas that can be used within their own projects and exterior spaces.

The show will be open from Thursday 15th - Saturday 17th March at Olympia, London.  To apply for 'Free' tickets visit If your visiting the show why not also come along to our stand and say hello!
